Los Angeles FC Unveils Crest, Colors, Co-Owner

Jan 8, 2016

Major League Soccer’s (MLS) newest club, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), recently gathered at the city’s Union Station to unveil its crest and colors, and also announced actor/comedian Will Ferrell as a part owner.

“This is no joke,” Ferrell says. “I’m actually a member of this fine ownership group, and it’s very exciting for me. I’ve never been a part-owner of anything. … I’m still part-owner of an ’84 [Toyota] Camry with my brother.”

Ferrell joins a group led by venture capitalist Henry Nguyen and features Earvin “Magic” Johnson, entrepreneur Peter Guber, former soccer star Mia Hamm Garciaparra and her husband, former baseball player Nomar Garciaparra.

The club’s color scheme — black and gold — also was revealed, along with its crest, which features an “LA” that shows the “A” soaring as a wing: a clear nod to the “City of Angels.”

The unveiling follows last May’s announcement that the club would build a stadium on the site of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, adjacent to the Coliseum in Exposition Park.

“The process started before we knew where the stadium was going to be,” says Tom Penn, club president, “And once we solidified that we were in the heart of Los Angeles, legitimately, with our brick and mortar, we really felt like we wanted to build around ‘LA,’ the moniker of ‘LA,’ because it’s global. It’s globally recognized, those two letters, and they mean something everywhere.”
